On 5 to 6 November 2024, PETRONAS Leadership Centre (PLC) proudly hosted the WBCSD Leadership Programme 2024 at the Upstream Experience Centre and CENERGI Biogas Plant. This esteemed initiative organised by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) aimed to empower business leaders with insights and strategies for sustainability-driven decision-making.
Programme Highlights
For over 20 years, the WBCSD Leadership Programme has provided key insights and cutting-edge research to representatives from nearly 150 companies. This year’s collaboration with Yale University and International Institute for Management Development (IMD) focused on pioneering approaches to integrate sustainable practices into business strategies. The programme featured 46 participants from global industry leaders such as PETRONAS, Amazon, Danone, and Shell, who began their learning journey since March 2024 in understanding and leading Sustainable Development. Together with WBCSD, Corporate Sustainability Office (CSO) and Sunway University, PLC co-developed the Sustainable Development in Action module with insightful sharing and experiential learning.
Sustainable Development in Action
On 5 November 2024, Liza Mustapha, Executive Vice President & Group Chief Financial Officer, PETRONAS welcomed participants to the Upstream Experience Centre and shared her insights on Asia’s pathway to net-zero and PETRONAS’ comprehensive energy transition strategy.
This was echoed by success stories from Ir. Ts. Khairul Salleh Jais, Senior General Manager of PETRONAS Refinery & Petrochemical Corporation (PRPC) and Amir Hamzah Ghazali, Senior General Manager of Malaysia LNG (MLNG), focusing on reduced emissions, community empowerment, and the adoption of technologies and automation. Aidonna Jun Ayub, Head of Social Enterprise Education Lab (SEEd.Lab), illustrated the importance of social entrepreneurship in addressing societal challenges, fostering inclusive growth, and supporting SDG goals.
The session continued with a discussion on “How Stakeholders Embed Sustainable Development in Their Strategy,” moderated by Joe Phelan, Executive Director Asia Pacific, WBCSD, with panelists Devpriya Misra, Director, Corporate Solutions, SwissRe, Datin Dr. Vijayalakshmi Samuel, Executive Director, AGV Sustainability & ESG Services and Kae Wen Looi, Vice President Procurement APMEA, Kerry. They discussed the shift from denial to decisive actions for sustainability, the importance of governance, and the role of sustainability reporting. They highlighted the organisational responsibility to implement the sustainability agenda throughout all aspects of the business, both on the bigger scale such as an audit of the whole business supply chain, as well as the smaller scale which includes paying attention to staff wellbeing. The day concluded with an open discussion and reflection led by Alison Stowell from Lancaster University and a VIP tour of the PETRONAS Twin Towers.
The event resumed on 6 November, where participants visited the CENERGI Biogas Plant in Pulau Carey to see renewable energy solutions in action. They witnessedfirsthand how converting waste into energy reduces the environmental impact of palm oil production and boosts Malaysia’s renewable energy portfolio, emphasising its importance for a sustainable future.
