Building a Culture of Growth: One Coaching Campaign at a Time

Jonathan Low, the guest speaker, delivering a keynote on building a coaching culture.

“Coaching is more than just a performance booster. It’s about unlocking your full potential and guiding you towards success, both professionally and personally,” declared Siti Ayu Abdul Wahab, Head of PETRONAS Sabah and Labuan Regional Office (PSLRO), in her opening speech at PETRONAS’ inaugural regional Coaching Campaign 2024.

Held on 7 and 8 May at Menara PETRONAS, Kota Kinabalu, the event was led by the Coaching Academy, under PETRONAS Leadership Centre (PLC), in collaboration with the PETRONAS Sabah team (PSLRO & SBA). It aimed to equip Sabah-based employees with valuable coaching insights and fuel their personal and professional growth.

The objectives of the Coaching Campaign 2024 were to:

  1. Heighten awareness on what coaching is and instill the belief that coaching will allow teams to win and push talent potential.
  2. Deepen understanding on why coaching is relevant to support talent development in delivering business results and accelerate growth in the company.
  3. Rally leaders to start role-modeling coaching practices within their circles of influence and make coaching a pervasive culture.

Choosing Sabah as the launchpad for this initiative underscores PETRONAS’ commitment to maximising employee potential through coaching.

An Event Packed with Insights and Interaction

The first day featured Jonathan Low, a renowned speaker and master certified coaching expert recognised as one of Asia’s leading sales, service, and leadership optimisers. He dazzled the audience with his session titled “Embrace the Coach Within: Cultivating a Habit of Coaching Excellence.” He covered elements of a coaching culture, introduced a coaching model, shared practical coaching tips, and even conducted a live coaching demonstration.

Throughout the day, interactive sessions like Speak Up Your Mind, Coach Develop Coach, and Coaching Masterclass allowed participants to engage in open discussions, share coaching knowledge and experiences, and learn fundamental coaching principles. Additionally, Coach Corner and exhibition booths provided information on various coaching topics such as Leadership, Innovation, and Agile coaching.

The second day offered valuable insights from the perspectives of leaders, coaches, and coachees. A moderated Coach Spotlight session featured PETRONAS Leaders M Johan Ariff M Supian (Sr General Manager, Sabah), Shazlina Shahriman (Head of Academy, PETRONAS Leadership Centre), and Ir Lau Swee Leong (Sr Manager, Technical Services).

In the Coachee Spotlight, Ariff M A Wahid, Manager, Material Corrosion Inspection, shared his experience as a coachee, highlighting how coaching sessions empowered him to step outside his comfort zone and achieve new goals.

As a whole, the 2-day programme resonated well with participants. With 306 enthusiastic attendees and an overall rating of 4.6/5.0, the Coaching Campaign 2024 was a resounding success.

Azni Raizam B M Sarip, Senior Manager (Special Project (OE R2)) at PETCO, praised the programme for offering fresh perspectives on coaching. “The Coaching Campaign provided a glimpse into coaching’s transformative power, boosting confidence, work performance, and overall satisfaction,” he said.

Meanwhile, Anand Kukreja, Executive (Condition Based Monitoring) at SBA, captured a key takeaway: “The coach-coachee dynamic is truly fascinating. It’s inspiring to see how both parties work through differences and achieve a truly engaging session. This two-way communication benefits everyone involved, allowing the coachee to support the coach as well.”
